Neo by Alphasmart - The Portable Word Processor Every Writer Should Consider
Sometimes minimal features make a gadget great. Less is more definitely describes the portable word processor called the Neo by Alphasmart, found at alphasmart.com. In my experience, the Neo is the ultimate tool for people who need to write.
It is supremely simple and easy to use, and allows writers to swiftly pour their thoughts and observations into digital text that can be loaded into a computer later.
The Neo has a compact keyboard with normal-sized keys that provide for comfortable typing. Above the keyboard is a small screen measuring 1-1/2 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. The gadget weighs a little over one pound and sets comfortably in the lap. It can also be used on a table or desk but it needs something to prop it up at an angle toward the user when used on such a surface.
The Neo provides eight separate file places so that the user can work on up to eight different documents at any time. The memory within each file is limited, but can easily hold over 30 pages of text. Once a document is drafted it can then be downloaded into about any laptop or desktop computer application that accepts text, including word processor programs, email editors, and web page editors. The Neo is also capable of being connected directly to a printer to print the raw drafts.
For writers, the Neo offers distinct advantages over a laptop computer.
The Neo is extremely energy efficient. The small screen and specialized purpose of the device require very little power. The gadget operates on 4 double A batteries. I have been using my Neo almost daily for one year and have yet to change the batteries. This is a pleasing contrast to a laptop computer that needs frequent charging.
The Neo does not heat up. Low power use means no heat generation, unlike laptop computers that are notorious for being toasty.
Because its function focuses solely on writing, the Neo spares writers the internet and email distractions that are easily accessible on a laptop or desktop computer. Whether someone is a novelist, a student, or a business professional, when writing needs to get done, the Neo allows the user to focus and accomplish the task.
The Neo is truly portable. It can be used inside or outside. It suffers no glare in sunlight unlike laptop screens that can be very difficult to see properly in sunlight.
Any writer will recognize the situation in which a thought strikes when the computer is shut off. Such important thoughts can be easily added to a document when drafting it on the Neo. The gadget turns on instantly. Push the button and write. This contrasts strongly to a laptop or desktop computer that needs to boot up for a couple minutes.
As has already been made clear, the Neo is a device with a very focused purpose. It is meant for writing. For people who require an easy, fast, energy efficient, distraction free, and portable means of writing, the Neo is blissfully perfect. In my experience, the Neo has significantly increased my written output and added to my personal comfort. I can kick back on the couch and write. I can sit outside and write, and I can do it without the distraction of internet access. The Neo is also a very affordable device, and will cost anywhere from $250 to $300 with shipping and taxes. This is a significant savings over a laptop. The bottom line on the Neo portable word processor is that if a person needs to write and wishes to be free of a more cumbersome and expensive computer when doing it, then the Neo is a practical solution.
